Good Worldwide Data Sources Report this article as Inappropriate to us !!!Login to Reply

We're starting a project that requires worldwide data for such things as country boundaries, roads, and rail lines. Have found several free sources of data for individual countries but would like to find a good source for worldwide data in a common format even if we have to pay for it.

Does anyone know of any such data sources.

Also, does anyone know of a more active GIS discussion board where I may find more information.

We're looking for the same thing, including country boundaries, admin level 1 (states, provinces, etc), admin 2 (counties, etc), zip codes, roads, city boundaries, placenames, etc.

So yea, we're asking for the whole world on a map... :D

Please keep me posted on anything you find out. Thanks!

GfK GeoMarketing has worldwide digital maps of postal and administrative boundaries - 240 countries.

Maps of the individual countries are saved in separate files.
The coordinates are based on geo-graphical coordinates (WGS 84). All map layers are absolutely consistent and fit seamlessly to the neighbouring countries.

Postal maps
Postal divisions are included for all european countries, Australia & New Zealand as well as North America and Puerto Rico. Additional postal map coverages can be obtained on request.

Administrative maps
Each country of the world includes at least the highest administrative level.

Topographical maps
Map layers with towns graded by number of inhabitants, streets, rivers and lakes are included for almost every country of the world. For european countries additional information are included, e.g. elevations, city areas etc.
