At last week’s GEOINT Symposium, presenters’ messages were laced with anticipation about what changes the new Administration would bring. Now, after a very exciting Presidential election, Americans are looking forward to change.

What this means for geointelligence still remains to be seen. With two wars and the issue of terrorism to contend with, it’s unlikely that the market for geointelligence technology in the U.S. will subside in spite of a floundering economy.

Exhibitors at GEOINT demonstrated their optimism in the future with a showcase of examples of products and solutions developed for geointelligence.

The following is an overview of the announcements made by some GEOINT exhibitors:

Northrop Grumman

Northrop Grumman is a company that has been formed by strategic acquisitions. According to the company, senior people on staff are in “constant communication” with the military. Highlighted at the conference was its recent acquisition of 3001 International, a company known for providing geospatial data production and analysis, including airborne imaging, surveying, mapping and GIS for domestic and international intelligence, defense and civilian customers.

The addition of 3001 to Northrop Grumman brings an opportunity to enhance collection architecture, and offers imaging capability that the company hasn’t had before, including lower altitude for higher resolution. Once collected, 3001 brings sophisticated imaging processing capability and LiDAR. The company does persistence surveillance and collection surveillance 24/7 on different layers.

Further, the two companies share synergies that will complement each other, such as Northrop’s high performance computing.

Among Northrop Grumman’s other demonstrations:

A route planning scenario that integrates Northrop Grumman geospatial architecture framework capabilities to address customer requirements, including semantic search, sensor Web enablement, data conflation and fusion, and geoprocessing and visualization services.

Social Mining Analytic Collaboration (SMAC), a new approach to intelligence gathering, leveraging Web 2.0 capabilities to offer a set of advanced analytic tools with a secure collaborative environment.

The Distributed Common Ground System (DCGS) Enterprise Framework, a framework of fixed and deployable ground processing systems for multi-source tactical intelligence, that forms that structure for all Northrop Grumman DCGS products and services.

Trinidad provides high resolution synthetic aperture radar imaging to the U.S. Military and government through a partnership between Northrop Grumman and Israel Aerospace Industries.

Spatial Rules dynamic cluster detection determines when a specified number of the tracked objects are within a specific proximity of each other at a given time.
ObjectFX defines itself as “not a full-fledged GIS” yet they are system integrators, creating a software platform to add geospatial capabilities for analysis into enterprise applications.

Inspired by the NGA, ObjectFX’s new spatiotemporal rules engine, SpatialRules version 3.0, is designed to provide “actionable intelligence to the right people in real time.” This enables users to monitor operations and respond to changing situations more quickly.

SpatialRules is actually a service oriented (SOA) middleware component capable of managing and analyzing large amounts of spatiotemporal data, then transforming it into usable information. Enterprise government organizations will find it useful for intelligence, homeland security and defense as it works with user-defined rule layers that allow users to track moving objects or real time events through automatic system generated notifications.

The technology could be viewed in action at the See-Know-Share exhibit which showcased NGA/NRO emergent capabilities.


ITT Visual Information Solutions’ Christopher Jengo was named the winner of the 2008 Geospatial Intelligence Award in the Industry Achievement Category, awarded annually by the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIS). Jengo’s work on the development of SPEAR (Spectral Processing Exploitation and Analysis Resource) tools earned him this distinction. SPEAR, a suite of more than 15 tools for use with ENVI software, enables image analysts and spectral scientists with limited advanced geospatial intelligence knowledge to create intelligence products within tactical guidelines without a lot of or any training. Common automated tasks for SPEAR include pan
sharpening, change detection and terrain categorization, as well as detecting lines of communication.

A visit with ITT Visual Information Solutions’ senior image scientist Bernard Brower revealed that additions to the SPEAR suite would be included in the upcoming ENVI 4.6 software release scheduled for release Q1 2009.

Also to ITT’s credit is the commercial imagery sensor that is in WorldView 1 and GeoEye 1, both launched this year. ITT is responsible for the process from capture through processing to delivery, and can optimize systems before the system is flying. Brower said that digital sensor cameras for commercial are becoming larger, and consequently it is harder managing data. ITT is now moving into the airborne delivery of systems. They use the IAS solution to stream data to users instantly.

A real concern is to be able to get data to warfighters and system administrators. Brower noted that commercial data providers must deliver data in NPJE, a complex compression that is slow. EPJE is a faster format and sends less data across the bandwidth at once. For warfighters on disadvantaged networks, they need programs where they can view data on low bandwidths, and system administrators need to stay within budget.


ERDAS is about to ship their ERDAS 2009 product. Showcased at the conference were the recently announced ERDAS APOLLO 2009, and new releases of ERDAS IMAGINE, LPS and ERDAS TITAN.

In addition the company joined with SGI in demonstrating the main server from Empire Challenge 2008, a server that hosted indexed metadata for data stores of imagery, serving data by way of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Services.

Held at the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, Empire Challenge 2008 showed joint and coalition interoperability among (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, systems and sensors. ERDAS with their OGC-compliant server, together with the Penn State Electro-Optic Center and Geospatial Industries, Inc. supported the OGC pilot by executing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) missions at Naval Air Warfare Center.


Introduced by Intergraph was new software functionality for its Geospatial Intelligence Production solution that is designed for defense and intelligence professionals to create geospatial analysis products more efficiently and quickly. With ImageStation Stereo for GeoMedia, users can capture photogrammetric 3D data using stereo imagery of aerial and satellite sensors in a GIS environment. Then analysts can collect, manipulate and update geometry and map feature attributes and do validations of geometry, producing more accurate maps.

According to Robert Mott, director Military and Intelligence Solutions and Leah Wood, Defense & Intelligence Industry manager, intelligence fusion is an area where they will begin to use UAV Video as a feature collection tool in the future. By integrating video with GIS they plan to offer more value. “The data management of UAV is still under development,” Mott said. In a partnership with Skyline Software, some UAV technology is available now.

Intergraph’s flagship geospatial product, Geomedia, can be tiered on top of classified add ons. TerraShare makes it possible to integrate imagery into time and mission critical applications like emergency response, highway design, and land information management applications. TerraShare provides an enterprise solution, structuring all geospatial imagery into a single enterprise catalog that is organized logically to meet user needs and workflows.

The four segments addressed by Intergraph include:

1) Data capture and collection

2) Enterprise content management

3) Analysis and exploitation

4) Dissemination and production generation


2D3, a wholly owned subsidiary of OMG, plc, along with Yotta and Vicon, has been public on the London Stock Exchange since 2003. President Jon Damush said the company’s expertise is “vision science,” the application of math and science to understand how imagery is perceived. Their flagship product, boujou, is an automatic camera tracker used in the film industry. Their technology, which employs special effects to insert a computer generated character into a live scene, registers two cameras for perfect “match moving.”

How this translates to geospatial, Damush said, is that in geospatial you have to register points in both frames in photogrammetry. Their product TacitView addresses the issue intelligence professionals have with motion imagery that is difficult to view and to derive value from. He contends that value must be added at each step in the chain of users, and TacitView gives you the tools to do that. “Someone at the receiving end of motion feed capture needs to understand what he’s looking at. Video is clumsy,” said Damush. “TacitView takes video and converts it into information they can use in their workflow and makes it easier for the user to view.”

TacitView exports geospatial and can extract data from imagery and drop it into a map. Each frame of video can be used to produce video or metadata output. The product supports lat/long and elevation and can create a map from video. It also has the ability to read current platform metadata streams.

Currently the product is in Beta and will ship at the end of 2008.

Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI)

Robby Robbins, director of marketing, Defense and Strategic Systems at Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI), spoke about the company’s strategic direction and resulting product line. Once a hardware company, SGI has transitioned to a solutions focus, offering Complex Event Processing (CEP). Offered for CEP is their new Silicon Graphics VUE, a suite of software visualization solutions that changes how users can use visual information.

EventVUE is a real time visual solution that integrates various data sources. RemoteVUE allows you to send data to any device, while PowerVUE allows you to do visualization without graphics cards. Eliminating graphics cards will definitely change the way complex data from multiple sources is managed and distributed.

Originally this product line was designed to correlate large amounts of financial information. Robbins said they have adapted this to the defense space, where it is necessary to collect all types of data from sensors, chat rooms, text, voice, etc. The VUE software utilizes the power of SGI’s Reality Center immersive environments and brings them to the laptop, desktop or even mobile device. The ability to “fuse” data from various, disparate sources into a 3D viewing experience and deliver it to whomever needs it on any device makes it enormously valuable to the defense and military industries.

“Agencies want to view their data in 3D plus time – 4D,” said Robbins. They need a solution that is automated and to be able to sift through large amounts of data in real time.


Being able to make critical decisions within a short space of time is a recurring and obvious theme for the geointelligence industry. GeoCommons from FortiusOne is another product that offers “visual analytics through maps.” GeoCommons provides visual analytics via a browser, streamlining the process of creating maps from core geospatial information, which can then be viewed by non-technical users. The company’s currently available products, Finder! and Maker! allow users to take advantage of the massive amounts of information they receive from disparate sources and be able to analyze it before delivering it the rest of the organization. A new product, Atlas! 
will be available in 2009, and will be a community concept based on the notion that maps tell stories, designed to encourage collaboration around finding and sharing maps as stories.


SPADAC launched EarthWhere 4.3, a commercially available enterprise-wide spatial data management product that helps customers locate imagery they need such as satellite and aerial imagery, terrain data, digital maps and vectors.

Last year SPADAC acquired EarthWhere from SANZ, a provider of data storage and data management solutions. With SPADAC’s enhancements and technical support to EarthWhere customers, the company reports a 79 percent growth in its customer product implementations.

Notable improvements to the 4.3 version include the addition of supported data formats, additional HARN projections, an updated ActiveIngest GUI, enhanced administration features, streamlined installation capabilities and a new optional LizardTech module.

EarthWhere now supports Landsat TM/ETM+ in NLAPS format, FORMOSAT-2 and WorldView-1. For customers using aerial-based imagery, more than 200 HARN projections were added.

Top News of the Week

Web geographic information system (GIS) technology takes a forward leap with the release of ESRI's ArcGIS API for Flex. With the Flex API, developers can combine GIS-based Web services from ArcGIS Server with other Web content, which can be displayed in simple, dynamic mapping applications over the Web or on the desktop.

Tele Atlas announced that the new version of its MultiNet digital map database is the first global digital map database to use community-provided data to validate changes. Released in October, MultiNet version 2008.10 incorporates community input provided by TomTom users in Europe and North America that strengthened Tele Atlas’ map change detection and validation process. MultiNet version 2008.10 also features an initial delivery of major specification upgrades including improved navigation, visualization and search capabilities.

Acquisitions, Agreements, Alliances

GeoEye, Inc. announced that on October 15, it signed a multi-year agreement with Rome-based Telespazio S.p.A. appointing Telespazio as GeoEye's new Commercial Regional Affiliate for the region of Europe and North Africa. Telespazio, a Finmeccanica/Thales company, will produce, market and sell Earth imagery and related products and services from GeoEye's newest high-resolution satellite, GeoEye-1, to customers in Europe and North Africa. GeoEye-1 was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California on September 6 and is expected to be fully operational this fall. Tele Atlas announced an agreement with Argentina-based Datamap to develop and deliver digital maps and related content covering Latin America’s second largest economy.

TerraGo Technologies and BAE Systems announced a collaborative agreement under which BAE Systems’ SOCET GXP v3.0 customers can now easily create, mark up and export geographically rich image data and maps to a GeoPDF file directly from the SOCET GXP workspace. In addition, customers can purchase the Map2PDF for SOCET GXP software module used to create GeoPDFs directly from BAE Systems.

DigitalGlobe and NAVTEQ announced a new relationship aimed at providing better support to the thousands of software developers using NAVTEQ(R) map data who want to include high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery from DigitalGlobe in their applications. As part of the agreement, DigitalGlobe becomes the latest member of the Partner Zone program on the NAVTEQ Network for Developers(TM) (NN4D) and will provide developers access to sample imagery free of charge for a limited term during the software development process.


DigitalGlobe announced that the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) has purchased the entire CitySphere 2.0 product, the recently launched, enhanced version of DigitalGlobe's extensive library of on-demand digital satellite and aerial imagery of the most populated global cities.

Autodesk announced it is working with the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) and the Incheon Urban Development Corporation (IUDC) to cooperate in the creation of Asia's first Digital City for Incheon, Korea -- the 'Tomorrow City' in Song-do City. Autodesk has designated Incheon as the second pilot city of its Digital City initiative, after announcing Salzburg, Austria in July.


Autodesk, Inc. announced preliminary financial results for the third quarter ended October 31, 2008. Based on preliminary financial data, the company expects total revenue to be in the range of $604 million to $607 million. GAAP earnings are expected to be in the range of $0.41 to $0.43 per diluted share. Non-GAAP earnings are expected to be in the range of $0.53 to $0.55 per diluted share and exclude $0.07 related to stock-based compensation expense and $0.05 for the amortization of acquisition related intangibles. Trimble announced the availability of high-accuracy, in-the-field mapping with its new Trimble VRS Now H-Star service in Ireland and Northern Ireland. A subscription to the Trimble VRS Now H-Star service gives users working in utilities, local government, natural resources, and land management the ability to obtain real-time, decimeter level accurate positions consistently and directly at the job site. With instant access to H-Star corrections on demand, field workers can be more efficient and high-accuracy mapping projects can be up and running in minutes to increase productivity.

Boundary Solutions, Inc. announced LandVoyage by LandNet Corp of Loveland, CO as the first application to use Placebase’s recently added national parcel layer to their Pushpin(r) platform. The parcel layer, as used by LandVoyage and delivered by Pushpin, is an online implementation of BSI’s National ParcelMap Data Portal (NPDP).

This online NPDP implementation consists of 62 million parcel boundaries in 600 counties linked to sites, characteristics and owner information attributes. This online deployment of NPDP is industry’s largest geoserver deployed polygon database.

geoXMF LLC, an enterprise GIS performance company, announced the release of XMF Accelerator, a commercial off-the-shelf, web-based software tool for simple, easy and fast enterprise GIS search and data access.

3Dconnexion, a Logitech company, announced that its line of 3D mice is now supported by Microsoft Corporation’s WorldWide Telescope, developed by Microsoft Research. 3D mice can enhance the experience for astronomy enthusiasts and educators flying through the virtual universe and exploring visually rich images of constellations and planets, whether for education or fun.
