Intergraph 2008 Report

Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada was the setting for the Intergraph 2008 conference June 2-5. Intergraph President and CEO R. Halsey Wise delivered the opening keynote address in the Coliseum, the venue for both Elton John and Cher and many other shining stars. Wise made the comment, why did Elton John and Cher bookend their performances around the Intergraph conference?

He joked that they arrived without a Power Point projector which they borrowed from Intergraph, and in exchange took John’s red piano off the stage.
The largest Intergraph conference to date drew over 2,500 attendees from over 60 countries. Wise pointed out that 50% of revenue comes from customers outside the U.S.
The theme of the conference, “Experience the Power” was a thread that wove its way throughout all the keynote presentations. Intergraph’s industry divisions are divided into Security, Government & Infrastructure and Process, Power & Marine. For the purpose of this report, we will address Security, Government & Infrastructure focusing on geospatial.
Wise said that Intergraph customers do work that changes the world we live in. Based on feedback from customers and users, Intergraph meets their request for an opportunity for structured networking. Customers are united to achieve common goals.
Cautioning against organizational contentment, Wise said that the status quo wants things to stay the same, and we must always seek good ideas. The ‘way we always do it” is the “pursuit of incrementalism.” He quoted the irascible Tom Peters, business consultant and writer: “Nearly 100% of innovation,from business to politics to life, is inpsired not by market anlaysis, but by people who are supremely pissed off by the way things are.”
The parting message here is we’ve got to keep changing. Change has been a popular topic at this year’s technology conferences, which to me is an indicator of just how important this is to the industry, and to the entire globe.
Wise outlined a framework for business, including five waypoints of change signalling how organizations experience change:
1. status quo, “the way things are.”
2. imbalance to status quo – shock or realization may drive
3. incentive to change – innovation
5. sustained achievement
In the status quo stage there are rewards for saying no. The disruption of the status quo is characterized by a general unease and people unhappy with the way things are. Wise said you need to be prepared for that before it happens. The incentive to change comes with the realization that there is a premium to achieving something better even if it means uncertainty. Transformation occurs when there is organizational freedom to create the future state. Sustained achievement is the reward for risk taking and organizations should remain in perpetual response to this phase.
Wise cited examples of great innovation and change: the City of Las Vegas being one of them. He credited Las Vegas’ openness to change with its success, and said that it has reached the sustained achievement phase. Over 5,000 people a month move to Clark County, over 40,000,000 visited Las Vegas in 2007, and 85% of the world’s top hotels are in Vegas.

He noted Lance Armstrong, seven-time winner of the Tour de France and cancer survivor, with his incredible achievement and daring accomplishments.
Wise showed graphs of each growth – the growth of Las Vegas, Lance Armstrong’s growth from a healthy cyclist to his cancer diagnosis at the age of 25, tracking his physical and mental battle, and five months after diagnosis, back on the bike, then the seven Tour de France wins. Overall, Wise said his most notable impact on the world is as a philanthropist, and founder of the LiveStrong Foundation to help cancer patients.
These examples preceded a graph that outlines Intergraph’s changes since it was founded in 1969. From 1995-2002, Intergraph was in the hardware business, which began to do poorly, the company experienced disruption and exited that business. From 2003 to 2004, Intergraph implemented the “Now, Next, After Next” goals toward innovation, and Wise cites this as the “Now” phase. 2005 to 2007 marked the “Next” transformation period, and 2008 marks “After Next.”
In the Now phase the company developed a vision, mission and culture, strategic plan, goals, and rebranded company, The Next phase, characterized by transformation, in which the company realigned business, created security government division and PPM, got out of areas they didn’t excel in. In the After Next phase the company plan to accelerate revenue growth, take advantage of R&D investments, product market and company expansion, and bold transformation opportunities.
By FYE 2010 Intergraph maintains the goal of reaching $1B revenue, $140 M of R&D in 2010. Their focus is on investment in Asia, India, European Union, energy, oil and gas, utility, security, real estate, land management, and vertical geospatial applications.
The Power of Innovation
Reid French spoke on “The Power of Innovation.” He stressed the importance of innovation to the global economy, and that it is critical to the success of a software business. In research conducted by Booz, Allen Hamilton (Global Innovation 1000), it was found that 45% of R&D spending is in North America, however market growth is greater in China and India. The GDP growth of China is over 11%. Of the new R&D centers that start up over the next five years, ¾ of them will be in China or India.
To most businesses, innovation is elusive, according to French. For one thing, spending more on R&D doesn’t necessarily give you greater returns. So with no correlation between R&D spending and profit growth, innovation remains least consistent and has the least amount of process discipline applied to it.

Creativity, which drives innovation, depends on intelligence but also depends on creative ability that can be learned.
How do you engineer process to get innovation results? Booz Allen Hamilton statistics showed that how often company worked with customers on R&D made a significant difference to innovation results.
French wove Intergraph back into the talk with noting the company’s innovation: in Security Government and Infrastructure the company was first in the world to integrate sensor data into their dispatch solutoin, he said, which became part of their critical infrastructure protection system.
For Utilities and Communications the operations center for SmartGrid technology improves the efficiency of the electrical grid. Intergraph solutions provide improved situational awareness and power restoration.
In the geospatial analytics field, Intergraph is working to develop motion exploitation for video. The new capability includes video sharpening from Video Analyst which will be included in the next release of the geospatial data management storage application, TerraShare, to be launched early in 2009. This technology could be viewed in the Tech Expo. With TerraShare, organizations are integrating imagery into time and mission critical applications like emergency response, highway design, and land information management applications. The geospatial imagery is structured in a single enterprise catalog so that end users can easily find and access an image without needing to know the file
type or any image processing technologies.
Intergraph spends $89 million on R&D a year, and works closely with customers to prioritize new functionality that will be rolled into core software applications via technical user forums.
French cites three core mistakes made regarding innovation:
· underestimating the unexpected
· underestimating power of people
· underestimating the rate of change
Many times innovation has come from unexpected places, he pointed out. Who would guess that a couple of bicycle mechanics (the Wright brothers) would invent the airplane?
Or that the U.S. Defense Agency would give rise to the Internet?
In the 1980s, French said IBM gave away DOS to Bill Gates. “He underestimated the OS and underestimated Bill Gates and his team. Would we make the same mistake today? Would you invest in Microsoft today?”
An example of a company underestimating the pace of change was the Great Western Stagecoach Company, one of the largest manufacturers of stagecoaches. When the railroad brought with it the need to change, Great Western knew they had to move to railcars, so they grafted their stagecoach design onto what they envisioned a railcar to be. “Don’t make the mistake of looking to the future while looking backward,” cautioned French. “Great Western is now nothing more than a footnote in history books because of their lack of vision.”

Guest Speaker: Lance Armstrong – “It’s Not About the Bike – It’s About Delivering Your Best”
Seven time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong has made the news with his valiant comeback from cancer, which he was diagnosed with at the age of 25. Listening to Armstrong is pure inspiration: he states that “Cancer may have been best thing that happened to me.”
He recounted his experience from the first discovery of his cancer and the knowledge that it was located in various parts of the body, through to his journey to recovery.
“In 1996, we had no Google to help search for hospitals, treatments, etc. we could only pick up the phone, or go to the bookstore,” said Armstrong. "This taught me how to win Tour de France." At first he was at an all time low. After the tumors began to shrink away during chemotherapy, Armstorng realized that “for the rest of my life it’s only going to get better.”
“That time taught me patience and encouraged me to go back and race my bike again.” Yet there was no one interested. In cycling, you must have a team to participate, and he had no assurance of a team or income.
In a last ditch effort, Armstrong called the U.S. Postal Service who sponsored the U.S. team, which was the worst team, and he raced for them for free in 1998. “We took the whole cancer experience and put that same reckless abandon into cycling, overhauled the postal service team, spent hours in the wind tunnel designing the best bikes, designed clothing, got a new coach, and new tactics. The new coach said he thought I should win the Tour de France. He said nobody thinks you’ll do anything, just go try to win it. I had no pressure or expectations on me. With our new model, new coach and new vision, in 1999, we won it. This happened and we won seven consecutive Tours
As a 33-year-old cyclist, in 2004 Armstrong formed the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and from it grew the LiveStrong Foundation, a resource center for cancer survivors and loved ones. People have responded phenomenally to the foundation, as nearly everyone in the world has been touched by cancer in one way or another. In conjunction with Nike, the foundation has sold 70 million “livestrong” yellow rubber bracelets at $1 a piece. As Armstrong pointed out, “When any of the politicos know you’ve sold 70 million of anything, they pay attention.”
Dr. Mostafa Madani, chief photogrammetrist product manager, Z/I Imaging; Klaus Neumann, project manager hardware, Earth Imaging Solution Center; and Henry DiPietro, VP sales, U.S. Photogrammetry gave an overview of the photogrammetry industry today, and the success of Z/I’s Digital Mapping Camera (DMC) and the ImageStation suite.
The DMC is not only a camera, said Madani, it’s a system with many peripherals that complete it which includes a sensor management system, a camera mount that can be sold as standalone, and more.
The adoption of the DMC is moving into many emerging markets, with 80 systems in place around the world, and worldwide service centers. Z/I sold 24 new cameras in 2007, and revenue grew 25% in 2007, DiPietro pointed out.
A major software release of the ImageStation suite will be made available this year for maintenance customers. The ImageStation suite allows users to process digital photogrammetry workflows from project creation to orientation and triangulation, 3D feature collection and editing, and orthophoto production with the use of aerial and satellite sensors. The user interface acts as a common photogrammetry project information warehouse from which each application can retrieve input and output parameters and data, and serves as a centralized launch point for each application. ImageStation products include: project management, image orientation, stereo data capture, DTM collection and
editing, and orthophoto production.
It is widely used by government, commercial photogrammetry and mapping agencies. The new release will include a complete update of sensor peripherals including an improved Z/I Mount, new copy station and readout station, and Z/I Inflight Management Systems Hardware (FMS) SSD.
As far as trends go, Dr. Mostafa Madani said that there will be no photo lab, no scanning, no reconstruction of interior orientations as large image programs will go entirely digital in the next three years, giving the example of the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP). There is a trend to larger ortho projects, as with the USDA and NAIP who are now getting 1 and 2 meter coverage of the U.S.
Elevation data will be created from the ingestion of LiDAR data and elevation data by image matching.
In the global GIS market, there is a trend toward Geomedia-based stereo compilation and data-centric production workflows such as PixelPipe and TerraShare. More products will be available off the shelf. Madani said that Intergraph will support more satellite sensors.
Klaus Neumann said the market leaders in adoption of the DMC are China and Japan. In Asia-Pacific, many companies go directly to digital as they aren’t invested in legacy film systems as we are in the U.S. There are numerous large mapping projects in China.
In Europe, there are increased requirements for direct digital acquisition for nationwide ortho programs. Customers want entire countries flown every three years and want to provide high precision for engineering scale projects, incorporating multi-spectral capabilities at a low price range.
In helping to keep costs down, smaller aircraft (SSD) are used today to collect data, which helps with fuel costs which helps the customer. Also the use of large format digital data with sensor combinations can save fuel.
The Enterprise Web Portal combines the ability to do data mining and look for trends in your data. All events are recorded and each event has a cause, and data can include the time of day. Built on GeoMedia WebMap, Intergraph’s InService takes x,y coordinates, does all the analysis and then displays it on the Portal. Users can be proactive and look at how they can reduce the number of outages within a certain time frame, for example, or look at vegetation to make sure that vegetation is not impacting electrical lines. The Portal will inform internal utility professionals and concurrently, data will be made available on the Web for public consumption.
Files can be generated for the Blackberry, and the Web Portal will integrate with Business Objects and data mining. The Enterprise Web Portal will be released soon.
Intergraph has a strong focus on government solutions and emergency services offerings. The new Business Intelligence for Public Safety solution suite can analyze and convert large amounts of law enforcement records and data into information that can be used for enhanced decision-making. Business Intelligence is a result of a collaboration between Intergraph and Business Objects, an SAP company, to combine application specific data from Intergraph’s emergency incident response, planning and reporting solutions with the proven Business Intelligence platform, Business Objects XI.
Intergraph also announced that their GeoMedia suite of geospatial information management and analysis products will support Microsoft’s SQL Server 2008 spatial enhancements which will provide customers with the ability to store and share their geospatial information.
Top News of the Week
ESRI announces support for Adobe Acrobat 9 software and new geospatial capabilities available in PDF with the release of ArcGIS 9.3. ESRI has collaborated with Adobe Systems Incorporated over the past year to ensure a seamless workflow for geographic information system (GIS) professionals using ArcGIS who wish to widely distribute maps in PDF. Recipients of PDF map documents can find and display a location in the file using x,y coordinates as well as measure features directly on the map. This enabling capability enhances both existing customer workflows and creates new ones because recipients without ArcGIS can directly interact in new ways with maps using Acrobat 9.
The Minnesota Office of Geographic and Demographic Analysis (OGDA), Department of Administration, has kicked off a project to design an enterprise GIS for State government. The State conducted a competitive procurement and chose Applied Geographics (AppGeo) of Boston to lead this effort. For this engagement, AppGeo will be supported by the Minnesota firm, Rowekamp Associates.
The project is titled “Geographic Information Systems Functional Transformation” and is part of a larger, State government-wide Drive to Excellence reform initiative started by Governor Pawlenty that seeks to make broad improvements to the way Minnesota state government operates and delivers services. Currently, GIS is deployed by many separate agencies across State government. The project goal is to develop, recommend and implement an organizational and governance framework for coordinating GIS as an “enterprise” activity of State government and to identify, recommend and begin to implement enterprise solutions to technical aspects of State GIS services and
Several national geospatial organizations have recently come together to create the Coalition of Geospatial Organizations (COGO). The Coalition evolved after several “Stakeholder” meetings that took place on an irregular basis since 2003. In August 2007, several of these organizations met to discuss areas of mutual concern and interest. In order to promote openness and effective collaboration, it was decided that the group should become a more formal organization.
COGO was developed to provide a forum for organizations concerned with national geospatial issues that will 1) improve communications among the member organizations (and others), 2) provide educational information on relevant issues for their respective memberships, 3) align and strengthen their respective policy agendas, and 4) facilitate development of strategies to address national issues.
Emergency services organizations now can rapidly analyze and convert vast amounts of law enforcement records and data into actionable information for enhanced decision-making with Intergraph’s new Business Intelligence for Public Safety solution suite.
In response to the demand for improved data visibility and reporting, Intergraph collaborated with Business Objects, an SAP company, the world’s leading provider of business performance optimization solutions, to combine the application specific data from Intergraph’s emergency incident response, planning and reporting solutions with Business Objects’ proven Business Intelligence platform, Business Objects XI.
With reference to the press release dated 2 June 2008, TomTom and Tele Atlas jointly announce that TomTom declares the recommended public offer for all issued and outstanding shares with a nominal value of EUR 0.10 each (the "Shares"; holders of such Shares being referred to as "Shareholders") in the capital of Tele Atlas (the "Offer") unconditional (gestand doen).
As announced in the press release of 2 June 2008, 63,625,232 Shares have been tendered for acceptance under the Offer. Together with the 27,235,651 Shares already held by TomTom and 1,685,000 Shares to be delivered by certain members of the Supervisory Board and Management Board of Tele Atlas pursuant to irrevocable undertakings, these Shares number in total 92,545,883 and represent 97.48% of the total issued and outstanding shares capital in Tele Atlas, and based on the offer price of EUR 30.00 per Share (the "Offer Price"), have an aggregate value of EUR 2,776 million.
Ambercore Software Inc., a global provider of high performance spatial software and services for Energy and Mining industries, is pleased to announce the acquisition of the Terrapoint Business Unit from Pulse Data Inc. The transaction was facilitated by funding from SQFive Intelligent Oilfield Solutions Ltd., a subsidiary of Quorum Oil and Gas Technology Fund Limited. Providing this additional growth capital to Ambercore, the Quorum Group continues to be a strong financial partner.
The GeoInformation Group, publishers of Cities Revealed aerial photography, announces that it has committed to an annual high-resolution aerial survey of London. This commitment is a direct result of a new long-term partnership, with a major UK Plc, that will last until 2014.
The weather report from Mars is great, thanks to the Optech LiDAR technology at the heart of NASA's Phoenix Mars mission. The Phoenix Mars lander made a dramatic landing on the Red Planet on Sunday, May 25th after a journey of 10 months and hundreds of millions of miles through deep space. The first LiDAR results from Mars arrived late in the evening of May 28th, amid cheers and applause from NASA officials and science team members gathered at JPL and the Science Mission Operations centre at the University of Arizona.
The global education community will gather August 2–5, 2008, at the ESRI Education User Conference (EdUC), an inspirational and collaborative forum that fosters learning and sharing about using geographic information system (GIS) technology across disciplines. Educators, administrators, researchers, librarians, and museum professionals from around the world will explore how GIS software enhances teaching and understanding as well as provides innovative solutions.
The EdUC will be held in San Diego, California, at the Marriott Hotel & Marina, where Dr. Anne Knowles, professor of geography at Middlebury College, will give the Keynote Address during the conference's Plenary Session. An alumnus of Duke University and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Knowles is also an editor of several books including Past Time, Past Place. Knowles' topic is Placing History: The Value of Geography in History Education. Her presentation will show how geospatial technology plays a key role in historical research and education.
The Intergraph GeoMedia suite of geospatial information management and analysis products will support Microsoft’s SQL Server 2008 spatial enhancements to provide Intergraph customers with an improved capacity for interoperability and information sharing. The spatial enhancements to SQL Server 2008 will benefit all of Intergraph’s customers who utilize SQL Server for the storage and management of their geospatial information.
The Intergraph Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Intergraph Corp. will provide a $25,000 donation and match additional employee contributions to the American Red Cross China Earthquake Relief Fund to aid survivors and relief efforts of the devastating May 12 earthquake.
Intergraph, which operates in 60 countries and maintains offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, is providing financial support though its foundation to the American Red Cross for its emergency relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake. The Red Cross will use the funds to provide relief supplies, mobilize relief workers and provide financial resources.
Emergency CallWorx today announced that it will be publicly demonstrating its products for the first time at the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) Annual 9-1-1 Conference in Tampa, Florida from June 7-12, 2008. This event will be the first public appearance of Emergency CallWorx, a company that was created in 2007 as a division of CLJ2, Inc. Craig Dollar, the founder of both CLJ2 and Emergency CallWorx, has been an industry executive, co-founder and consultant of several Public Safety companies over the past two decades.
Tele Atlas , a global provider of digital maps and dynamic content for navigation and location-based solutions, announced findings of the Tele Atlas "Location-based Services (LBS) and Web 2.0 Impact Survey" conducted at the recent Web 2.0 Expo. The survey results highlight that the majority of developers see considerable business opportunity in the LBS space.
Nearly 92 percent of the 638 Web industry professionals surveyed believe location-enhanced applications present a revenue opportunity for their companies, while more than 40 percent of respondents expect to drive revenue from location-based services within the next two years. Of those surveyed, more than 48 percent indicated that they planned to offer an application with location capabilities within the next year.

CACI International Inc announced that it has been awarded a $26 million subcontract by ARINC Engineering Services, LLC, to continue its support for activities associated with a classified U.S. Army intelligence database supporting the Facilities, Infrastructure, and Engineering Systems (FIRES) program. Under the terms of the three-year award (one base year and two option years), which has a ceiling value of $33 million, CACI will help acquire information for the database, populate the database with this information, and provide end-to-end technical support. The company will perform the majority of this work in Charlottesville, Virginia, home to one of CACI's
fastest-growing offices. With the award, CACI expands the size and scope of its FIRES database support and strengthens its core competency in data, information, and knowledge management.
GeoEye, Inc., a premier provider of satellite, aerial and geospatial information, announced new awards totaling $22 million to supply geospatial products and related services. Under this award GeoEye will provide the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) a significant amount of value-added, imagery-based geospatial-intelligence products including the company's airport mapping product line. Imagery processing and production will be performed at GeoEye's advanced imagery processing centers located in St. Louis, Mo. and Thornton, Colo. These awards are in addition to the task order for imagery purchases the company received from NGA last fall.
Dotted Eyes has been chosen by the NHS in England and Wales to provide digital mapping data to the NHS in a landmark four-year agreement. The company has been awarded the contract following an OJEU competitive tendering process run by The NHS Information Centre (The IC) on behalf of both ambulance trusts and the wider NHS in England. The new arrangement provides NHS organizations with a range of digital mapping data products available through a fixed schedule of prices.
Intergraph bestowed Icon Awards, its highest customer distinction, upon eight U.S. and international industry and government leaders for their innovative use of and results with enterprise engineering and geospatially powered software.
The Icon Awards were announced in Las Vegas at Intergraph 2008, the largest ever Intergraph international user conference. The awards honor companies and organizations that have deployed and leveraged Intergraph software in a visionary manner to yield results that have significantly contributed to their business and industry.
LizardTech, a division of Celartem Inc. and a leading provider of software solutions for managing and distributing digital content, received an honorable mention in the Innovation Award category for its Express Suite Family of Products during the Geospatial Leadership Awards ceremony at the 2008 GeoTec Conference in Ottawa Ontario. The Geospatial Innovator Award category considers companies that have created new software or hardware that expands the possibilities of the geospatial industry.
In recognition of the growth that Carlson Software has been experiencing in civil engineering sales and its training division, Harry O. Ward, PE, has been named a vice president by the land development software company. As such, he will be directing the operations of Carlson College and the Civil Engineering Division.
3001 is pleased to announce Arnold Machtinger, P.Eng. has joined 3001 as Director of Canadian Operations. Mr. Machtinger is a Professional Engineer registered with the Association of Professional Engineers in the Province of Ontario. He has extensive experience in the high tech industry at major corporations in senior management, sales and marketing and managing the delivery of Canadian-focused solutions. Mr. Machtinger earned his Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1969. ERDAS announces an enhancement to AutoDesk’s MapGuide Enterprise 2008 Platform that provides seamless integration with ERDAS Image Web Server (IWS).
Recently released, Autodesk MapGuide Enterprise offers support for consuming and publishing raster and vector data using Web Mapping Services (WMS) and Web Feature Services (WFS). This enhancement enables MapGuide users to quickly and easily consume WMS feeds from IWS. An updated Feature Data Object (FDO) library enables imagery to be served from IWS. MapGuide Enterprise makes the WMS request to IWS and publishes the returned image.
LizardTech, a division of Celartem, Inc., and a leading provider of software solutions for managing and distributing digital content, announced the release of its free GeoExpress 7 SDK, a toolkit for decoding and viewing MrSID and JPEG 2000 images in third-party applications.
This latest release of the GeoExpress 7 SDK offers support for 64-bit platforms, providing developers better compatibility with GDAL and other third-party libraries along with access to more memory than before when working with MrSID and JPEG 2000 imagery. Improved documentation and sample applications for this release will make it easier for developers to integrate with third-party applications.
