Proxix Solutions Releases Updated Mainland Determination and Distance To Water Feature Database

PALM HARBOR, Fla., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Proxix Solutions, a leading innovator in developing GIS data, applications and Web services, released its updated Mainland Determination and Distance to Water Feature database.

In the aftermath of five intense storms in 2004 and this year's Hurricane Katrina, meteorologists are predicting that we are on the cusp of a prolonged period of more frequent and intense hurricanes. NOAA has stated that they expect 11-14 tropical storms for 2005 with seven to nine becoming hurricanes. Three or more are expected to be major hurricanes.

Geospatial solutions will become even more important to insurance companies with increased risk from more tropical storms and new regulations and standards. Proxix's Mainland Determination and Distance to Water Feature database gives underwriters the precise distance from insured properties to the coastline including bays and inlets. The mainland determination file also determines if a property is on the mainland or on a barrier island.

The Mainland Determination and Distance to Water Feature database provides feature annotations that competing "shoreline" files often lack. The database is annotated with the following five attributes: Local Feature Name (e.g., Tampa Bay), General Name (e.g., Gulf of Mexico), State (e.g., FL), Local Feature Code (e.g., H53) and General Feature Code (e.g., H51). Every quarter, Proxix updates the database using NOAA files, navigation maps and satellite imagery. The Mainland Determination and Distance to Water database can be used by most widely adopted GIS software packages, including ESRI Shapefile and MapInfo MIF/MID formats.

Much of the damage from Katrina along the Mississippi and Alabama coast is from storm surge flooding as well as wind, even though the properties are not in a "flood plain". Proxix is currently enhancing the Mainland Determination database to include elevation at a very high spatial resolution within 2.5 miles from the coast to be included in a future release.
