Renesas Electronics and Fortinet Highlight Integrated Security and Threat Protection for Connected Cars at Accelerate 18

Explore the Renesas autonomy™ Cadillac Vehicle with Fortinet’s Cutting-Edge Cybersecurity Solution for Connected Car Networks at Accelerate 18

LAS VEGAS — (BUSINESS WIRE) — February 28, 2018 — Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced it will spotlight advanced cybersecurity capabilities for the connected cars with Fortinet (NASDAQ: FTNT), a global leader in broad, integrated and automated cybersecurity, at Accelerate 18, February 26-March 1, 2018, at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas in Las Vegas.

Recent cyber breaches demonstrate the urgent need for integrated security for increasingly sophisticated vehicle networks to protect systems from attacks to electronically hack controlled vital functions, or for example, recent attacks on the CAN bus designed to interfere with the car’s brakes, door locks, and dashboard computer from 12 miles away. During Accelerate 18 at the Chelsea Theater, Cosmopolitan Hotel, Fortinet will demonstrate a prototype security solution, highlighted with the Renesas autonomy™ Fleet, to address the major cybersecurity risks in today’s connected car network architecture.

The Renesas autonomy Cadillac SRX vehicle will showcase a video demonstration of Fortinet Security Fabric technology running on the Renesas R-Car H3 to provide security policy management and automated protection of the powertrain and communication domains in the vehicle.

  • This includes the LTE module, vehicle-to-vehicle communications module, the wireless access point, the engine control module and more.
  • Specific video demonstrations of mock IPS and DDoS cyberattacks will show how Fortinet FortiOS automatically secures the data transmitted from a public cloud service to the in-car entertainment system.
  • Supported by the on-chip security functions of the Renesas R-Car H3, Fortinet secures the communications between the domains and sets policies to limit access between certain domains to mitigate and control potential cyber threats.

“As the increasing amount of vehicle connectivity opens more opportunities to make the driving experience both safer and more enjoyable, it also expands the surface for potential automotive cyberattacks,” said Craig Johnson, Director, Automotive Advanced Systems Innovation Department, Automotive System Business Division, Renesas Electronics. “It is critical to address the growing need for integrated security in connected cars, and we are excited to showcase our Renesas autonomy Cadillac vehicle and the cybersecurity advancements developed by Fortinet to demonstrate secure network solutions that meet the stringent requirements of the connected vehicle environment.”

A connected car is equipped with Internet access and a wireless local area network (LAN), allowing drivers to share Internet connectivity with other devices both inside and outside the vehicle. To provide suitable cyber protection and ensure consumer confidence, automobile manufacturers need to design and deploy technology with a security-first mindset.

Security systems need to span across communications standards, devices, and networks. They also need to extend visibility, interaction and control beyond a single vehicle to include the larger transportation ecosystem, including road and traffic control systems. By 2025, it is projected that there will be 300 million connected cars up from 37 million in 2016, with annual revenues for connected car equipment and associated services to surpass $250 billion.i
