PTV's Executive Board signs ERSC - marking the 2nd UN Global Road Safety Week
Karlsruhe, Germany, 08 May, 2013 -- The European Road Safetly Charter, ERSC, invites stakeholders to proactively implement measures within the sphere of their responsibility which help reduce road fatalities. The Charter has more than 2,000 signatories. PTV Group, a leading provider for software and consulting services for traffic and transport logistics, now also joins the road safety community. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Schwerdtfeger, a member of PTV's Executive Board and representative of the globally operating group, signed the charter this morning.
Around 1.24 million people lose their lives on the world's roads each year. That is why the United Nations (UN) proclaimed the period 2011 - 2020 as the Decade of Action for Road Safety. According to the World's Health Organisation, which initiated the UN Global Road Safety Week, it would be possible to save 5 million lives in this decade by taking far-reaching action. "As a provider of transport planning software we consider it our duty to contribute to improved road safety by developing appropriate solutions," says Schwerdtfeger. "Signing the charter reaffirms our commitment to road safety."
The PTV Group has been actively involved in road safety work for the last fifteen years. EUSka, its electronic road accident analysis tool is used by police forces in eleven German federal states. This knowledge and expertise has been continuously developed, resulting in the launch of the new module PTV Visum Safety. This tool allows planners using the transport planning software PTV Visum to include precise accident data in the process of infrastructure planning. This affects both the macro level, with the safety analysis of road networks, and the micro level of local accident investigation. Accident data can be studied and analysed within one software package – ensuring data consistency without the need for additional tools. Offering solutions is one thing. Handling them is another. Therefore, road safety was a key topic during the third Newcastle Field Trip. Every year, students from the University of Newcastle visit PTV in Karlsruhe to learn from PTV's transportation experts. During this year's study trip, the students had the opportunity to get familiar with accident data analysis, especially focusing on black spot management and ways of preventing future accidents.
