Ordnance Survey Agrees to OpenGeo Suite Enterprise Edition Contract

Open Source Tools to be Used for WMS 1.3 plus INSPIRE View Service Extensions for GeoServer

New York, NY, October 20, 2010 - OpenGeo today announced that Ordnance Survey, Great Britain's national mapping agency, has agreed to an OpenGeo Suite Enterprise Edition contract to support its ongoing spatial data infrastructure initiatives.  The OS OnDemand service from Ordnance Survey has recently adopted GeoServer as its primary Web Map Service to customers, and the OpenGeo Suite contract will fund core development work for all GeoServer deployments to meet INSPIRE View Service requirements, including WMS 1.3

“Ordnance Survey is keen to work with OpenGeo to advance the open source GeoServer baseline,” noted Peter ter Haar, Ordnance Survey’s Director of Products.  “Funding open source will bring cost savings to the wider public sector that has a requirement to become INSPIRE compliant.”  OS OnDemand is a national Web Map Service (WMS) that serves raster images, including OS MasterMap Topography Layer, directly into a customer’s geospatial application using Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) WMS standards.

OS OnDemand provides access to Great Britain’s most detailed mapping information, providing a superior level of currency, data accuracy and richness that businesses, government and individuals can rely on. The service provides another way of accessing the same rich, accurate data Ordnance Survey customers are used to – but over the Web, making datasets available to everyone.  OpenGeo’s President, Chris Holmes noted:  “This agreement helps advance the open source geospatial code base in important ways that meet actual user needs.  It is further evidence of what mission critical, national government programs can do with supported open source software.”
