Baker Awarded Data Collection Contract by Mississippi Department of Transportation

JACKSON, Miss., Feb. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation (AMEX: BKR), announced today it has been awarded a two-year, $3.3 million contract by the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) to provide statewide image-based roadway feature data collection services. The work performed will support traffic data collection, feasibility studies, geographic information systems (GIS), and Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) reporting.

Under the terms of the contract, Baker will perform and manage the collection of roadway feature data along approximately 30,000 miles of designated highway and other classified roads within the state of Mississippi. The field inventory process will be accomplished via custom Global Positioning System-based video collection technology that will facilitate the capture of digital images along each roadway, while simultaneously referencing the images to their associated real-world location, to enable viewing by both GIS-based and web-based users.

"This is an exciting time for MDOT and a great opportunity for Baker to extend its 50-year relationship with this important client," said Baker's James H. Kopf, P.E., vice president in the Company's Jackson, Miss., office. "MDOT is developing a robust Safety Analysis Management System (SAMS) which requires a statewide inventory of the roadway system and roadway features. This project, the single largest, most complex GIS inventory project MDOT has ever undertaken, will allow Baker to showcase its GIS capabilities and help MDOT meet its strategic objectives."

According to Ray Balentine, Director of Intermodal Transportation Planning at MDOT, "This partnership will allow MDOT to move forward in its mission of providing a safe intermodal transportation network. The data collected will be used as the backbone for the Department's SAMS project, as well as for our GIS and federally mandated reporting efforts."
